The Hackles are a folk collaboration from Astoria, Oregon, the oldest settlement west of the Rockies, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean.

The trio of Kati Claborn, Luke Ydstie, & Halli Anderson are slated to release their fourth full-length album I’ve Got Sugar, Who’s My Neighbor? in the fall 2026.  The album was recorded primarily live at The Rope Room Studio in Astoria and departs from their previous two albums, A Dobritch Did as a Dobritch Should (2019) & What a Beautiful Thing I Have Made (2023), in its’ aim to capture the intimacy & energy of their live shows.

Kati and Luke originally met as members of the band Blind Pilot (with whom they continue to play), and songs written and gigs played in the downtime between tours formed the seed of what would become The Hackles. They met Halli when her band River Whyless toured with Blind Pilot in 2016. The trio started playing together when Halli moved to Astoria from Asheville, North Carolina, and Luke and Kati recruited her to play on The Hackle’s first  album The Twilight’s Calling it Quits (2018).

Powerful harmonies & an unconventional & nuanced use of guitar, violin, banjo & clarinet combine to create a compelling & unique brand of folk that lies somewhere between Appalachia and Topanga Canyon. Their songs are imbued with compassion, humor & a dark honesty.

All Things Considered

On WABTIHM:

“What a beautiful thing I have made is achingly raw and breathtakingly alive: The Oregon group’s radiant, resonant music provides a captivating backdrop for life’s deeper questions and considerations, compelling us to step back out of our everyday and once again dive deep into ourselves, our worlds, and the things that make our lives worth living.” ~ Mitch Most, Atwood Magazine

“With their three-part harmonies and ethereal arrangements front and center, songs radiate with pure hallucinatory cinematic suggestion.” ~ Lee Zimmerman, The Alternate Root

“The group’s juxtaposition of weighty and contemplative lyrics against warm and inviting melodies is extremely rewarding.” ~ Twangville

"A thinking man’s showcase with lively & imaginative songs.” ~ John Apice, Americana Highways

On A Dobritch Did as a Dobritch Should:

“Dobritch is a lush, melodious journey through all the good and bad in life—the things we can control and those out of our control.” - American Songwriter

“Highly refined songwriting and awe-inspiring harmonization.” - Rough Trade

“Built off wonder, reflection, strain, and curiosity, A Dobritch Did As A Dobritch Should is a mature reckoning with life’s innumerable tides. Exciting yet tranquil, expansive yet disciplined, The Hackles find their voice in a mesmerizingly rich sea of indie folk sound.” - Atwood Magazine

“The lyrics on this album paint vivid images but sew them together with bits of gauze, cobwebs, and clouds.” - Steven Rafferty Americana UK

About as authentic PNW folk as you can get.” - Susan Varnes-Newland Seattle Wave Radio
